Kyle Filipowski Drafted 32nd in 2024 NBA Draft

Duke's big player, Kyle Filipowski, was finally picked in the 2024 NBA draft, even though it happened a day later than expected.

Filipowski, a 7-foot player who spent two seasons with the Blue Devils, was chosen 32nd overall by the Utah Jazz. The NBA used a new format this year, holding the first round of the draft on Wednesday night and the second round on Thursday.

Filipowski and Kansas forward Johnny Furphy were invited to the NBA's green room for the first round, but neither was picked.

Filipowski, who averaged 16.4 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore, didn't have to wait long on Thursday. He was picked right after University of San Francisco center Jonathan Mogbo, who was chosen 31st overall by the Toronto Raptors to start the second round.

Furphy had to wait a few more picks, but he was eventually chosen by the Indiana Pacers, who traded with the San Antonio Spurs to get the 35th pick. The Pacers used it on Furphy, an Australian forward who shot 36% last season at Kansas.

With the 36th pick, the Spurs selected Juan Nunez, a Spanish point guard. He was the first of the 10 players who went to ESPN's Seaport studios for Thursday's second round to hear their name called.

Another player who attended Wednesday's draft but wasn't picked, G League Ignite's big man Tyler Smith, was chosen 33rd by the Milwaukee Bucks.

Bronny James was picked 55th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, where he will join his father, LeBron.

Having the second round on a separate day was a big change for the NBA and its teams. Before, the second round followed right after the first on draft night, creating a hectic situation where teams struggled to keep up and had to work late into the night to sign undrafted players and two-way contracts.

Besides being on its own day, the second round had four minutes between each pick, instead of the usual two minutes.

The 18-hour gap between the end of the first round and the start of the second round allowed teams to talk about possible trades to reshape their teams.

Several trades occurred just before Thursday's draft. The Raptors exchanged forward Jalen McDaniels with the Sacramento Kings for forward Sasha Vezenkov, guard Davion Mitchell, and the 45th pick. The Golden State Warriors traded the 52nd pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Lindy Waters III. Additionally, the Houston Rockets acquired guard AJ Griffin from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for the 44th overall pick.
