Biden and Trump Spar Over Abortion, Taxes, and Character in First Debate

Donald Trump and Joe Biden argued about abortion and taxes during their first presidential debate. Trump had trouble speaking clearly, and Biden corrected Trump's false statements about January 6, the national debt, and claiming he oversaw the best economy ever in the U.S.

Biden called Trump "the worst president in American history," based on historians' opinions. In response, Trump praised his tax cuts, saying they were unprecedented with four reductions.

Trump often responded to direct questions about the economy, abortion, or the opioid crisis by talking about unrelated topics like immigration or China. He also made untrue statements about abortion, the environment, and the border multiple times. CNN moderators did not correct Trump's false claims.

Biden's voice was sometimes hoarse, possibly due to a cold according to his campaign. He often found it challenging to finish his sentences. In a memorable moment early in the debate, Biden was criticizing Trump's tax policies and struggled to get his point across, eventually saying, "We finally beat Medicare."

After the debate, commentators discussed Democrats' worry about Biden's performance. Some suggested the party should think about choosing a different candidate at the convention in August. Democratic strategist David Plouffe on MSNBC emphasized that voters, both swing and base, are concerned about Biden's age, and these concerns were made worse by his performance that night.

At the beginning of the debate, CNN moderator Dana Bash questioned Trump about his stance on abortion if Roe v. Wade were overturned.

Trump said, "I appointed three Supreme Court justices who ended Roe v. Wade." He mentioned that currently, states have control over abortion laws, which he believes reflects the people's wishes. Trump also supports exceptions to a ban on abortion. Biden defended Roe v. Wade and the legality of abortion. Trump then shifted the discussion to illegal immigration during the debate.

Trump falsely claimed, echoing a belief among religious conservatives, that Democrats support policies allowing abortion up until birth. He also incorrectly stated that ending protections from Roe v. Wade was universally desired, despite polls consistently showing that the public wants some level of access to abortion to remain legal.

However, Trump accused Biden of lying and spreading false information.

Trump claimed, without evidence, that "millions of people" are entering the country and receiving social security benefits. He also argued that the opioid crisis stems from fentanyl made in China and smuggled into the US through the southern border.

Biden mentioned that he has a plan to enhance technology and staffing at the border, which Republicans in Congress rejected at Trump's request.

The two candidates had contrasting opinions on the conflict in Ukraine. Biden accused Vladimir Putin of being a war criminal and warned that Putin could expand the war to NATO countries like Poland. On the other hand, Trump praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as the "world's greatest salesman."

Trump denied being responsible for the January 6 insurrection. Instead, he argued that Nancy Pelosi, who was the House Speaker at the time, should be held accountable for rejecting the deployment of National Guard troops. This was one of several claims he made that were questionable.

Biden responded with a frustrated expression, which was a common sight throughout the debate. Trump turned a question about his pursuit of "revenge" into a rant about the president's son, Hunter Biden.

The debate in Atlanta is important for Black voters, who are crucial in deciding elections in this swing state and beyond. Biden acknowledged that he understands why Black Americans may feel disappointed with the progress under his administration. However, he pointed out significant achievements in employment, loan forgiveness, and other areas during the past four years.

Trump responded by reminding voters that early in Biden's political career, Biden referred to Black criminals as "superpredators."

When asked about Social Security, Biden suggested that taxing millionaires would ensure the system remains financially stable without affecting anyone earning less than $400,000 annually.

Biden said it's absurd to think we shouldn't support seniors, highlighting the advantages of the Affordable Care Act.

Biden responded by mentioning Trump's affair with adult film actor Stormy Daniels while his wife Melania was pregnant, describing Trump as having "the morals of an alley cat."

Trump denied having a sexual relationship with Daniels.
