David Tennant and Minister Kemi Badenoch Clash After LGBT Awards Speech

David Tennant got into a heated argument with U.K. Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch shortly after he was honored at the British LGBT Awards.

David Tennant won the Celebrity Ally award at the British LGBT Awards and gave a speech about how important Pride is to his family, saying they are personally invested. He also called out Kemi Badenoch, the U.K. Minister for Women and Equalities, for her stance on excluding trans women from single-sex spaces.

David Tennant, in his speech, said he felt a bit down that simply believing everyone should live freely and without harm needs to be awarded. He said, "It's just common sense and human decency. We shouldn't need to highlight it." He added that he hopes for a world where people like Kemi Badenoch, who opposes trans rights, don't exist—not wishing her harm but just wanting her to be quiet. Until then, he feels honored to receive the award.

After the video of Tennant's speech went viral on X (formerly Twitter), Kemi Badenoch responded. She said, "A wealthy, left-leaning, white male celebrity is so blinded by his views that he doesn't see how bad it looks to attack the only Black woman in government by wishing for my existence to end. Tennant is a known supporter of the Labour party. This is a glimpse of what life will be like if they win. Don't let the bigots and bullies win."
