Whittaker Shines in UFC Saudi Debut, Eyes Quick Return at UFC 305

Robert Whittaker silenced any doubts about his readiness to take on any challenger with his emphatic performance last Saturday. In what many consider his most daring bout yet, Whittaker (26-7) delivered a knockout against Ikram Aliskerov (15-2) just 1 minute and 49 seconds into their middleweight main event at UFC Fight Night. This event marked the UFC's debut in Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom aims to rival Las Vegas as the global "Fight Capital of the World."

Whittaker was originally set to fight undefeated middleweight Khamzat Chimaev (13-0), but Chimaev had to pull out due to illness just last week. The UFC then brought in Aliskerov, a promising newcomer with only two UFC fights under his belt, as his replacement. It turned into a high-risk, low-reward scenario for Whittaker, yet he agreed to the challenge without hesitation.

"I've said it before—I'm the boogeyman," Whittaker declared. "I believe I'm the best in the world and the toughest matchup in my division. I'll step up to any fight, any place, any time. Tonight, I showed exactly that."

Despite Whittaker's past as a UFC champion, the betting odds were nearly even before his fight with Aliskerov. Aliskerov, 31, hails from Dagestan, like retired lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, and hadn't been defeated since 2019. His lone loss leading into Saturday came at the hands of Chimaev.

Whittaker surprised Aliskerov just over a minute into the fight with a powerful right hand counter. The punch staggered Aliskerov, causing him to retreat towards the fence. Whittaker pursued him and landed a precise jab that further rocked his opponent. As Aliskerov tried to recover on his knees, Whittaker delivered a devastating right uppercut that effectively sealed the fight. Referee Marc Goddard allowed Aliskerov a brief moment to gather himself, but it was evident that he couldn't continue.

A loss would have been tough for Whittaker, considering his dominant record in the middleweight division. His only UFC defeats at this weight were against current champ Dricus Du Plessis and former champ Israel Adesanya, who are set to face off at UFC 305 in August in Perth, Australia. This win ensures Whittaker stays in contention for a shot at the title in the near future.

Right after his victory, Whittaker mentioned he's open to a fast turnaround and competing at UFC 305.
