Shifty Shellshock, 'Butterfly' Singer of Crazy Town, Dies at 49

Shifty Shellshock, the lead singer of the rap rock band Crazy Town known for their hit song “Butterfly,” has passed away at the age of 49.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s website, Shellshock, whose real name was Seth Binzer, passed away at his home on Monday. The cause of death has not been revealed yet.

Shellshock and his Crazy Town co-founder, Bret Mazur, first teamed up in 1992 under the name the Brimstone Sluggers. They later renamed themselves Crazy Town and expanded the lineup with members Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr. (known as JBJ), Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein (DJ AM), and Antonio Lorenzo “Trouble” Valli. The band's debut album, "The Gift of Game," dropped in November 1999, followed by a tour supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In October 2000, Crazy Town dropped "Butterfly" as the third single from their album "The Gift of Game." The song samples the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty” and showcases Shellshock’s relaxed rapping style with lines like “Come my lady, come-come my lady, You’re my butterfly, sugar baby,” blending rap and rock effortlessly. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks, making it their most successful track.

Following the disappointment of Crazy Town's second album, "Darkhorse" (2002), the band disbanded. Shellshock then ventured into a solo career, teaming up with Paul Oakenfold for the 2002 track "Starry Eyed Surprise," reaching No. 41 on the charts. In 2004, he released his debut solo album, "Happy Love Sick," which gained moderate popularity in Europe.

Shellshock openly discussed his battles with addiction and was featured on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" for two seasons, followed by two seasons of "Sober House." In 2012, he was hospitalized after slipping into a coma but thankfully recovered. More recently, in 2022, he was arrested for a DUI.

Shellshock is survived by his three children: Halo, Gage, and Phoenix.
