Pirates of the Caribbean Actor Tamayo Perry Dies in Hawaii Shark Attack

Tamayo Perry, an actor from Pirates of the Caribbean, has passed away after a shark attack in Hawaii.

Perry, known for his roles in Blue Crush and Hawaii Five-0, was surfing at Malaekahana beach on Oahu when he tragically died on Sunday afternoon.

Local emergency services got a call at 1pm about a shark attack. They used a jetski to recover Perry's body from the ocean.

At a press conference, Honolulu Ocean Safety's acting chief, Kurt Lager, said Perry was a beloved lifeguard and professional surfer known worldwide and on Oahu’s North Shore.

"Tamayo had an infectious personality and loved everyone even more than they loved him," Lager added. "Our condolences go out to his family."

In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Perry played a buccaneer alongside Penélope Cruz and Johnny Depp. He also worked as a stunt performer in the Owen Wilson surfing movie, The Big Bounce.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death “a tragic loss,” saying he was a legendary waterman, highly respected, and a great member of the ocean safety team. He asked the public and press to honor and respect Perry’s family during this difficult time.

Despite all the media attention, there were only 69 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide last year, with 10 being fatal, according to the 2023 International Shark Attack File by the Florida Museum of Natural History. Florida had the most unprovoked shark attacks with 16, but none were fatal.
