Injuries Sideline Top Gymnasts Ahead of Olympic Trials

Gymnast Shilese Jones decided not to participate in the U.S. Olympic trials. She made this choice one day after hurting her left knee during vault training.

USA Gymnastics said Jones was removed from the competition after she was checked by doctors on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was one of the top candidates to join Simone Biles on the five-woman team. They were expected to do well and were likely to win gold in Paris.

Everything changed because of one uncomfortable landing on the vault.

Jones was practicing on the vault before Friday night's competition when her left leg bent in an unusual way upon landing on the mat. She needed assistance to leave the podium but later came back to compete in the uneven bars, which is her strongest event.

The gymnast from the Seattle area earned a score of 14.675, the highest of the night. However, she walked carefully off the podium and did not participate in the balance beam or floor exercise events.

Jones is one of three women whose chances of going to the Olympics were dashed by injuries this week. Skye Blakely, who came in second to Biles at the U.S. Championships recently, tore her Achilles tendon in her right leg during training on Wednesday.

Kayla DiCello, who was an alternate for the 2020 Olympics, tore her left Achilles tendon while performing on the vault on Friday.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, DiCello wrote, "Although this isn't the outcome I had hoped for, there's still a lot to be proud of. This is not the final chapter of my journey."
