Simone Biles Dominates Trials, Leads US Gymnastics Team for Paris Olympics

Simone Biles, the current world champion, secured her spot as one of only four American women gymnasts to participate in three Olympic Games. She achieved this by finishing first in the all-around competition at the 2024 US Olympic Gymnastics Trials held in Minneapolis on Sunday.

The four-time Olympic gold medalist ended with a total score of 117.225. Suni Lee took second place with 111.675 points, while Jordan Chiles finished third with 111.425 points.

Simone Biles, aged 27, who became the most accomplished gymnast in history at last year's world championships, secured her place on the team automatically by finishing first. Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and 16-year-old Hezly Rivera will also be part of the US women's gymnastics team heading to Paris next month alongside Biles.

Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong were selected as alternate athletes who will travel with the team.

Biles began her competition on the vault, earning a score of 15.500. She showcased her signature move, the Yurchenko double pike.

In her second event of the night, the uneven bars, Biles demonstrated her consistency by achieving a score of 14.200.

Similar to the first night of the competition, Biles struggled on the balance beam during her third rotation. She scored 13.900 points after a slight error on an aerial move led to her falling off the beam.

For her last performance of the evening, Biles impressed with her floor routine, earning a standing ovation from the audience at Target Center, including her husband Jonathan Owens, an NFL player with the Chicago Bears. She received a score of 14.725, securing her victory in the competition.

Simone Biles, aged 27, who became the most awarded gymnast in history at last year’s world championships, secured a guaranteed spot on the team by finishing first.

During the Tokyo Games in 2021, Simone Biles encountered a condition known as "the twisties," which caused her to experience mental blocks and lose awareness of her body positions. As a result, she withdrew from several events.

She returned to competitive gymnastics last year after taking a prolonged break from the sport to focus on her mental well-being.

Biles mentioned that being in a good mental state is what motivated her to return to another Olympics.

Biles told NBC that regularly seeing her therapist every Thursday is crucial for her, and it's a significant reason why she's competing today.

When asked about being the oldest American woman gymnast since the 1950s to go to the Olympics, Biles chuckled and said she knew she still had more to accomplish after Tokyo.

"Just returning to the gym, putting in the effort, and believing in the journey... I knew I would make a comeback," Biles added.

Biles mentioned that she feels she's in the same position when asked about being a mentor and leader to the younger gymnasts.

Biles expressed that she understands the emotions they are experiencing. She added that she will mentor and support them to help ease their burden.

After Biles performed her floor routine on the first night of the competition to a song by Taylor Swift, Swift commented in a post on X, saying, "I've watched this so many times and I'm still not prepared. But she's prepared for it though."

When asked about the post, Biles mentioned that her team and Swift's team communicate with each other.

"I've had the opportunity to meet her a few times," Biles added. "It's been really nice."

This year, at 27 years old, Biles has been in excellent form, securing her record-extending ninth title at the US Championships earlier this month.

She came into the trials as the clear favorite to win the all-around competition and secure a spot on the US team for the Paris Olympics. After the first day of the women's event on Friday, she led the standings ahead of Jordan Chiles and Suni Lee.

In Paris, Biles will first compete to increase her collection of seven Olympic medals in the women's team final on July 30, just two days before the all-around final.

The men's competition wrapped up on Saturday, and Asher Hong, Stephen Nedoroscik, Frederick Richard, Brody Malone, and Paul Juda were chosen for the team. Khoi Young and Shane Wiskus were selected as alternate athletes who will travel with the team.

The Olympics are set to start on July 26 and continue until August 11.
