Tubi Launches Free Streaming Service in UK, Competes with Netflix and Disney+

Rupert Murdoch's Fox Corporation has introduced its free streaming service, Tubi, in the United Kingdom.

The platform will vie with services like Netflix, Disney+, ITVX, Channel 4’s streaming platform, and BBC iPlayer.

Fox announced that the service will start with over 20,000 movies and TV episodes available whenever you want, including content from Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, along with its own original shows.

Current offerings include the Twilight films featuring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, the horror movie Candyman, and Tubi's own reality series House of Heat.

Anjali Sud, Tubi's CEO, stated: "For the past ten years, Tubi has focused on offering extensive, free, and enjoyable streaming in North America. We believe now is the ideal moment to bring this approach to audiences in the UK. Importantly, we are dedicated to understanding what UK viewers enjoy and providing them with more of what they love."

Fox states that in the United States, where it has 80 million active users, Tubi matched Disney+ in total time spent watching content.

Additional current offerings in the UK include the action film Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler, the comedy Happy Gilmore featuring Adam Sandler, and the horror comedy Happy Death Day.

Included in the UK offerings are episodes from shows like Great British Menu, The Secret History of the British Garden, Paul Hollywood’s Pies & Puds, and Mary Berry’s Foolproof Cooking.

Streaming services are fiercely competing for market dominance despite significant financial losses and consumers grappling with the cost of living challenges.

During the Covid pandemic, streaming services saw a surge in popularity, leading companies like Netflix, Disney, and Apple to invest heavily in high-budget shows to attract subscribers. However, with growth now slowing down, these companies are prioritizing cost-cutting measures and aiming to achieve profitability.

Sports and live events have become more crucial for media companies. Netflix will broadcast WWE wrestling, and Disney intends to stream live sports from its ESPN network.

Tubi emphasizes its commitment to a completely free model supported by ads with minimal interruptions. Meanwhile, other streaming services have introduced cheaper ad-supported options in their competition to attract subscribers.

In March, Murdoch's conservative news channel TalkTV announced it would cease broadcasting on television after being on air for two years, transitioning to an online-only format starting in the summer.
